You&rsquo;ve gotta see this one for yourself!\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>December 24: Noche Buena (Christmas Eve)<\/strong><br \/>\n\tChristmas Eve is the actual day of celebration and activity (not Christmas Day). <em>Posadas<\/em> end &#8212; Mary and Joseph find their stable &#8212; while <em>ponche<\/em> drinking and <em>pi&ntilde;ata<\/em> whomping begin.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStarting in the afternoon, the <em>z&oacute;calo<\/em> fills with festive folks and fun: solemn religious processions, merry traditional dances, blaring <em>bandas<\/em> (so everyone can dance), and pyrotechnic displays bright enough for Santa to see from the North Pole. The reveling pauses, though, for Catholic &ldquo;rooster&rsquo;s&rdquo; mass (<em>misa de gallo<\/em>) at midnight.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>December 31: A&ntilde;o Nuevo (New Year&rsquo;s)<\/strong><br \/>\n\tGreet the new year a lot like you greeted Christmas: with dancing, music, fireworks in the square, presumably after a large <em>cena<\/em> with your family (homestay or real!).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>January 2: Las Cuevitas (Teotitl&aacute;n del Valle)<\/strong><br \/>\n\tMake the sacred trip to the &ldquo;little caves&rdquo; of nearby Zapotec town Teotitl&aacute;n del Valle to request that your dreams come true, by constructing them out of sticks and stones. Really.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>January 6: Dia de los Reyes (Kings&rsquo; Day\/Epiphany)<\/strong><br \/>\n\tOften the kings bring the gifts to children in Mexico, not Santa, so this day is of equal if not more commercial importance than Christmas.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMake sure to eat yourself a slice of the famous &ldquo;kings&rsquo; ring&rdquo; cake, the <em>rosca de reyes<\/em>, being sure not to get the piece with the little baby Jesus figurine. If you get him, you&rsquo;re obligated to make tamales for all of your friends on February 2!<a href=\"http:\/\/teachmemexico.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/rosca-de-reyes.jpg\" rel=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"\" title=\"\"><div id=\"attachment_94\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94\" style=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/teachmemexico.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/rosca-de-reyes.jpg\" alt=\"Rosca de Reyes, Kings' Ring Cake, for January 6\" title=\"Rosca de Reyes\" class=\"size-full wp-image-94  wp-caption alignright\" height=\"211\" width=\"283\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosca de Reyes, Kings' Ring Cake, for January 6<\/p><\/div><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDuring this 2012-13 holiday season, you can also marvel at what can be made from paper mache at the <em>pi&ntilde;ata<\/em> festival, or from corn husks at the <em>totomoxtle<\/em> show; admire (and buy) locally dyed and woven textiles at the expo; and honor Oaxaca city&rsquo;s patron saint, the <em>Virgen de la Soledad<\/em> (Virgin of Solitude), on her day (December 18). Plus there&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/teachmemexico.com\/oaxaca-spanish-schools.php\" name=\"What to Do in Oaxaca\" target=\"_blank\">everything to do and see in Oaxaca<\/a> that&rsquo;s there all year &#39;round!\n<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t<strong>Gift-Wrapped School Packages<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tSeveral Spanish schools in Oaxaca offer special Christmas packages, specifically designed to have you and your family not only learn lots of Spanish, but also fully participate in the seasonal fun and fascination.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCome for one, two, or three weeks (or more, of course!) starting mid December.
